2009 Montana Peregrine Falcon Survey Results

With the aid of area-agency biologists, private biologists, falconers, and qualified birders, we documented 84 active Peregrine Falcon territories during the 2009 field season . Prior to the initiation of extensive survey efforts in 1999, the number of known territories averaged 17 (1994-1998), ranging from 13 in 1994 to 19 in 1998 . The results from year 2009 reflect an increase of 71 active territories over the 1994 pre-survey number.

In 2009, biologists located 13 new territories, the highest number recorded in a single field season, and recorded 7 historic territories as active. A historic territory is one that was active at any time during the 1994-2008 study periods, but inactive during the previous survey year (2008).

We counted 176 fledged young at 79 Peregrine Falcon territories, an average of 2.2 young/territory. This exceeds the 15-year average Montana productivity of 1.9 young/territory from 1994-2008.
